La société LG Corp. a été créée sous le nom de Lak-Hui Chemical Industrial Corp. en 1947.[3] En 1952, Lak-Hui est devenue la première entreprise coréenne à entrer dans l'industrie des plastiques. Au fur et à mesure que l'entreprise développait son activité plastique, elle a créé GoldStar Co. Ltd. en 1958. Les deux sociétés Lucky et GoldStar ont fusionné pour former Lucky Goldstar.
En 1995, pour mieux concurrencer le marché occidental, la société Lucky-Goldstar Corporation a été rebaptisée LG. La société associe également les lettres LG à la devise de l'entreprise - Life's Good -
